Quilts have long been used in the African American community to tell stories, and as an alternate form of communication. Linda continues this powerful tradition by portraying important figures, sharing folklore and history, and commenting on contemporary social justice issues. Indeed, the stories told though Linda Martin’s striking fiber art extend the long history of African American narrative in quilt making.

Linda Martin layers small pieces of fabric to create the subtle shading and contours that give her images a lifelike, multidimensional feel. Her improvisational style is primitive and joyful yet sophisticated in its pointillist precision. More like collages than quilts, her images are inspired by history, her experiences and daily life, she says. Each piece has a didactic quality, an outgrowth of her background as an educator and her irrepressible urge to teach. Quilts depicting insects and animals, for example, draw on her work with young children.

Martin’s clever use of symbolism, provide subtle reminders of Egypt’s connection to Africa. Her work is a metaphor for her life. “I am always trying to point out my truth to other people,” Martin notes. “As we take small pieces of our lives daily, our being is created.”
